Penn State head coach James Franklin spent time during his Tuesday press conference kicking off the program’s spring practice session talking about newness. New players, new coaches, new rules, new realities as his Nittany Lions embark on earliest stages of their 2025 season.

“It’s like anything else, right?” Franklin said. “You can’t be stubborn and just say, ‘This is how we’ve always done it.’ You’re going to have to adjust and embrace the new rules.”

Tuesday evening, a report from OwlScoop.com’s John DiCarlo put a new light on the possibilities entailed within.

After Colorado head coach Deion Sanders proposed the possibility of linking up with another program for a portion of spring practices, including the Buffaloes’ spring game, with Syracuse head coach Fran Brown taking him up on the offer on X, new Temple head coach K.C. Keeler revealed the Owls have had preliminary conversations of the same variety.

“Penn State reached out, and we’re talking about possibly doing something like Syracuse and Colorado are doing,” Keeler said. “And I’m thinking to myself, ‘Do I really want my guys out there? They have some good players. And so that’s kind of where we are now. It gets a little bit more secretive (when coaches are asked by reporters about players) this time of year when the portal’s opening up.”

Blue White Illustrated has learned that an initial call was made with Temple to gauge interest from the Owls for the possibility. Penn State has not publicly commented on the report, though feedback to BWI suggested the pairing is unlikely.

Changes coming to Penn State Blue-White Game?

During his Tuesday press conference, though, Franklin acknowledged some level of changes are in the works for Penn State’s Blue-White Game on April 26 at Beaver Stadium.

“There are some things that we will not do,” said Franklin. The game will not be televised for some of the reasons we discussed and you heard other coaches maybe talk about. And we will have a spring game probably more similar to what we’ve had in the past, at least right now as we go through these 15 days. That could change.

“But I could see it being maybe a little bit shorter. One of the things I don’t think we’ll do is a halftime. There have been years where we’ll have 75,000 people out there, halftime for 20 minutes, and the parking lot becomes more attractive than the second half and the tailgating. So we will probably condense it down, maybe a little bit shorter quarters, maybe no halftime.”

As for the opponent, the Blue and White teams are still likely to face off again in the annual spring scrimmage.
