Top Penn State wrestling recruiting target decommits from Iowa

Top Class of 2026 recruit Bo Bassett has reopened his recruitment. The senior-to-be from Johnstown, Pa., and Bishop McCort star backed away from his pledge to Iowa on Sunday night. Penn State wrestling was one of the schools in the running for him before he picked the Hawkeyes on Feb. 4, 2025.
“After a lot of prayer and talking with my family, I’ve decided to decommit from the University of Iowa,” Bassett wrote on social media. “This wasn’t easy, but I believe it’s not the right fit for me as a wrestler, a person, or for my faith journey. I’m grateful for the opportunity, and I’ll never speak a bad word about their program. This is about finding the place God wants me to be. This is a huge decision in my life and it has to be the right one.
“I would like to thank all of the Iowa fans who have supported me. You have been amazing and I am grateful for the support you showed me. I have opened up my recruitment.”
Bassett was, and will continue to be, highly sought after following his move away from head coach Tom Brands’ Hawkeyes. Oklahoma State will be in the running to land him, and the Lions should be back in the mix, too, along with others.
“Maybe it wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right decision,” Bassett said on a live stream when announcing his commitment to Iowa. “You get what you earn, so I’m excited to be a Hawk.

“I know I’m from Pennsylvania, but I’m excited to feel that Iowa love. I know if you’re from Iowa, you know Iowa wrestling. Pretty excited to come out in Carver-Hawkeye Arena for the first time and hopefully create a legacy that lasts forever.”

It now appears that he will create that legacy elsewhere. His brother, star Class of 2027 recruit Melvin Miller, recently put Penn State in his top nine. His standout high school teammate, Jax Forrest, is currently committed to David Taylor’s Oklahoma State program.
It was not immediately clear what Bassett’s plan would be as it relates to coming to a new decision. He is currently No. 2 on MatScout’s senior big board behind only Forrest, and is the top wrestler in the country at 149 pounds, according to the same outlet.
Penn State currently has two Class of 2026 commits, New Jersey’s Jayden James and Pa., native Sam Herring.
