Penn State redshirt junior receiver Trey Wallace missed Saturday’s regular season finale with Maryland due to an undisclosed injury. The Alabama natives was listed as questionable on the Big Ten pregame availability report. He went through early pregame warmups and then was in pads as the team came out for full warmups about an hour before kickoff. However, after the team exited its stretched period and broke into position drills, he merely watched as the rest of his position mates went through work with position coach Marques Hagans and analyst Mark Dupuis. He then did not see the field over the resulting 60 minutes that punched the Nittany Lions ticket to the Big Ten title game with Oregon. Will he be available for that game?

“Trey tweaked something during the week and was not able to go,” Franklin said Sunday. “We are hopeful that he’ll be able to go this week. But, too early in the week to really tell. But was unable to go this past week.”

Franklin revealed the news during his first news conference of game week. He and Ducks coach Dan Lanning both spoke with reporters on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. CBS will televise the game from the home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts. Oregon is an early 3.5-point favorite. The total is 50.5 points at this stage of the week.

Penn State receiver outlook

The Penn State receivers continue to be a question mark in offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki’s attack. That isn’t going to change at this time of the year. The offense has and will continue to go through star tight end Tyler Warren. Without Wallace on the field Saturday, Omari Evans led the receivers room with four catches for 49 yards. Tyseer Denmark caught one pass for 15 yards on the final play of the game for a touchdown. Julian Fleming, and Liam Clifford each added one catch for five yards. Otherwise, Hagans’ room was shut out.

As the postseason starts, Wallace leads the room with 35 catches for 579 yards and three touchdowns. Clifford has 17 receptions for 279 yards and a score. Fleming, who joined the team via the transfer portal this offseason, has a 14-176-1 line. And then Denmark is at 2 catches for 28 yards and the score on Saturday.

“I was pleased with the wide receivers overall [against Maryland],” Franklin said. “I keep pushing each week to make sure that we’re continuing to get those guys as many opportunities as possible. It’s going to be really important for us as this the season goes on.

“So, that position and the development of that position and the production of that position has been priority number one, really, all offseason and all season. So overall pleased.”
