Video Breakdown: Audavion Collins gives Penn State options at cornerback
Penn State football’s transfer portal saga at cornerback is complete. After gaining and losing former North Carolina defensive back Storm Duck this winter and spring via the portal, the team has a new face on the roster. Former Mississippi State cornerback Audavion Collins committed to the program Tuesday afternoon.
To understand how things went down and what he brings to the table, film analyst Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel recap his commitment. Check out the full video to get their thoughts, and subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube so you don’t miss any breaking news from BWI.
Not a lot of common threads between Collins and Penn State
Unlike some of Penn State’s portal acquisitions and targets over the last several years, Collins wasn’t a former prospect that the Nittany Lions targeted in 2022. The former three-star corner gained 17 offers as a part of the Class of 2022, but defensive backs coach Terry Smith wasn’t in on the Georiga native at that time.
Despite that, Collins comes to Penn State with all four years of eligibility after redshirting last season and seeing no action in games for the Bulldogs. T-Frank and Pickel discuss this and his second recruitment in the portal. Pickel details which college teams were in on Collins since he put his name in the portal last month and what, if anything, he knows about the final group of teams Collins decided between.

Next, T-Frank gives his thoughts on Collins’ high school film, which is still relevant after zero playing time last season for Mississippi State. Then, he describes how the corner from SEC country fits into Penn State’s system and which recent recruit Collins reminds T-Frank of. While it’s a limited sample size of film, T-Frank feels like Collins is typical of a Penn State cornerback in several ways and points out some noticeable strengths from Collins’ highlight film.
Finally, the duo discusses how having another young cornerback on the roster changes things for the group in the future. Will the second-year defender have a chance to see playing time? Or will his presence affect a different area of the team? Lastly, they discuss how Collins affects freshmen Elliot Washington and Lamont Payne this fall.
