Video Breakdown: Penn State adds Hicks to incoming portal class
Penn State basketball continues to put pieces of the puzzle together for their 2023-2024 roster this spring. The latest is former Temple sharpshooter Zach Hicks. On Thursday afternoon, the 6-7 transfer portal player locked in his commitment to the Nittany Lions and new head coach Mike Rhoades.
To learn more about what Hicks brings to the table and how he fits into Rhoades’ system, basketball insider Nate Bauer and Thomas Frank Carr discuss his commitment. They’ll also discuss how the overall team-building efforts are going so far.

Hicks Brings valuable skill to Penn State
Bauer sees one clear and defined role Hicks brings to the table for the Penn State basketball team.
“I’m going to call him a wing. He’s a shooting guard, but he’s six-seven and 185-pounds. But Hicks is a shooter, right? Not necessarily Like Andrew Funk, who was one of the best shooters in college basketball this past year, so not that, but he fulfills that role.
He’s a career 36% three-point shooter. He’s a volume three-point shooter. He took 163 in his freshman year and 225 this past season,” Bauer says.
Not only is Hicks a quality shooter with great size, but he’s a high-priority get for the new staff. According to Bauer, he was one of the first portal targets for the incoming coaches.

“To my knowledge, he was the first visitor to campus that Penn State had under Mike Rhoades. Rhoades took the job on March 30th; I believe it was. That was when he was introduced, and Hicks was on campus the Friday and Saturday before Easter.”
“He’s a guy who I think fits what Penn State wants to do. He fulfills that shooting need, and to get him is a fairly substantial get.”
Finally, Bauer thinks that this shows positive momentum for Penn State’s NIL situation with the basketball program. As fans remember, that was a major sticking point that led to former head coach Micah Shrewsberry leaving the Nittany Lions for Notre Dame. However, the increased revenue isn’t infinite.
This (roster building) is going to go into June. It might get into July. We’ll see. But filling 13 scholarships is going to be an ongoing process. And I’ll drop this here because I think people are paying attention. Some of it will have to do with ongoing pursuits in the Nile space, right?”
