LOS ANGELES — Penn State players kneeled side by side as redshirt freshman Ryan Barker trotted onto the field for the biggest kick of his life. The walk-on drilled a 36-yard field goal to lift the Lions past USC 33-30 on Saturday at the LA Memorial Coliseum. As the ball sailed through the uprights and hit the netting, the Nittany Lions raced off the sideline to mob their recently-promoted field goal kicker, who made four boots on this day and was perfect on each extra-point try. The celebration was on.

Lions coach James Franklin shook hands with counterpart Lincoln Riley of USC and then hugged everyone he could, from his family to friends, players, coaches, and athletic director Pat Kraft. All the while, his players were sprinting around the field doing the same before eventually ending up in the corner of the venue where the most Penn State fans still there gathered. Defensive tackle Hakeem Beamon took a large blue and white flag from a cheerleader and attempted to plant it at midfield. That effort did not go well, and then Franklin took the flag from another would-be planter of the flag on the USC logo. The team then left the field by high-fiving plenty of fans clad in white before heading to a jubilant locker room.

How did the Penn State celebration look in the locker room?

“It was really cool,” James Franklin said. “But the visiting lockers make it hard because they’re so small. There’s no space. Like, most home lockers, you got space where you can enjoy it all together. And the visiting locker rooms are broke up and divided and small. So it’s, it’s hard. It’s not the same. But as you can imagine, it was awesome in there. And to me, that’s what it’s all about. For me at this point in my career, I just want to see the players achieving their dreams and having fun and being rewarded for all their hard work, and the same thing with the staff.

“So that’s that’s what it’s all about. For me at this point in my career, I want to see them achieve their dreams and goals. So really really cool for me. It’s going to make for a great ride home. It’s going to make for a great bye week. And there’s a ton of things I think we’re going to be able to learn from this game, and we need to learn from this game. Because we’re far from perfect. But we’re also 6-0 and 1-0 this week, and we’re going to take it and run.”
