WATCH: Penn State coach Cael Sanderson, Josh Barr, talk beating Jacob Cardenas, Lions' win over Michigan
STATE COLLEGE — Penn State wrestling won its 13th Bryce Jordan Center dual meet, its 11th match of the season, and its 67th in a row on Friday night when it blasted Michigan 39-0 in front of a large crowd across campus from its usual Rec Hall setup. The Lions won the takedown battle 22-0 and racked up bonus points in four bouts en route to covering a 38.5-point spread.
“I think overall, we wrestled fine,” Lions coach Cael Sanderson said. “I think these guys went out and did what they needed to do. Michigan’s always got a tough team. Obviously, they got a great coaching staff, so their guys are going to be ready to go. But yeah, I think the guys wrestled well and it’s just getting ready for Sunday now.”
The expected headliner bout of the evening left no one disappointed. No. 4 Joshua Barr of Penn State reverse No. 2 Jacob Cardenas of Michigan with four seconds left in the second tie breaker period to beat the Wolverine 3-2.

Both wrestlers earned escapes over the first seven minutes of action. After a scoreless sudden victory period, Cardenas escaped in the first tiebreaker period to lead 2-1. He then rode Barr for the first 20 seconds of the second tiebreaker period. That meant, even if the Penn State redshirt freshman escaped to tie the match, Cardenas would win it on the riding time tiebreaker. That ultimately became irrelevant, as Barr stood, turned in, and gained control of Cardenas as the two came back to the mat with four seconds left to wrestle. He rode out the period from there before standing and fist-pumping toward a roaring BJC crowd.

“Well, after I think we went out of bounds maybe the first or second time he was already up on riding time,” Barr said. “So it’s kind of like desperation time at that point. But, just staying focused and get a reversal to win. So that’s just what I focused on.”
“I thought I could have wrestled a lot better tonight. It’s another opportunity to get better.
