Watch: Penn State head coach James Franklin recaps 17-7 win over Northwestern
Penn State had its fair share of ups and downs Saturday, but the Nittany Lions improved to 5-0 following a 17-7 win over Northwestern. With a steady rain falling the majority of the game, the conditions had a major impact on both teams, as Penn State and Northwestern combined for an eye-catching eight turnovers.
The Nittany Lions finished the game with five total turnovers; four fumbles and one interception. All three of Penn State’s running backs fumbled the ball, with Nicholas Singleton fumbling it twice. With that said, James Franklin made it clear after the game that the rain was no excuse.
“I’m never going to allow the weather to be an excuse,” James Franklin said. “The weather will never be an excuse for us. We need to continue working there. We don’t go inside when it rains. That’s why. We’ll continue to do that and emphasize that this week.”

Quarterback Sean Clifford also made a few questionable decisions. He finished the game 10 of 20 passing the ball for 140 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Parker Washington ended up being his main receiver on the day, totaling four receptions for 73 yards.

While the offense may have a rough performance, the defense had one of its best games so far this season. Senior defensive tackle PJ Mustipher has taken some time to get back to best following an ACL injury in 2021, but he had a major impact Saturday, leading the team in tackles with eight. Safety Ji’Ayir Brown also had an interception, while defensive end Nick Tarburton forced a fumble and recovered another.
After the game, Franklin also admitted that running back Devyn Ford is no longer part of the program.
“He’s decided he wanted to focus on academics and we wish him the best. I have a ton of respect for him and wish him nothing but the best,” Franklin said.
