STATE COLLEGE – After suffering its first loss of the season, Penn State got back on track Saturday night in its annual White Out game, defeating Washington 35-6. Unlike many of this year’s games, the Nittany Lions had no issues getting off to a strong start offensively, scoring touchdowns on all four of its opening series. The defense also dominated the Huskies, holding Washington to just 193 yards.

Penn State head coach James Franklin was pleased with his team’s performance after the game.

“In my opinion, the game was won on third down,” Franklin said. “We were 77 percent on third down to their 30. I think we were 7 of 7 in the first half to start the game. The turnover battle was tied. Explosive play battle we won. Not as explosive as we would normally would like to be, but we still won that battle. I think it was 13 percent to five percent.”

Quarterback Drew Allar was once again excellent, completing 16 of his first 20 pass attempts. He finished the game 20 of 28 for 220 yards and one touchdown. It was actually the rushing attack that totaled the most yards, with Kaytron Allen leading the way with 20 carries for 98 yards and a score. Freshman Corey Smith padded those stats with a 78-yard run late in the game.

But as we’ve seen so often this season, tight end Tyler Warren was the star of the show offensively, totaling eight receptions for 75 yards. He also has a massive impact down near the goal line, taking two direct snaps in for touchdowns.

“I can’t see how this guy doesn’t win the Mackey Award and the Paul Hornung Award. I don’t see how he doesn’t,” Franklin said after the game, referring to Warren. “And, they’d be proud of that guy representing that award because he does everything right both on and off the field. He’s done it that way since the day he stepped on campus.”

But the defense was also excellent, totaling five sacks, two of which were by Abdul Carter. Franklin said that was a key factor in the game.

“The sack battle, that was a dominant aspect of the game,” Franklin said. “I thought our O-line, we didn’t give up any sacks in the game. Some of that was Drew extending plays, but then our defense was able to get five sacks in the game.”
