Watch Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson's weekly news conference
Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson held his weekly news conference on Tuesday. His team is ina action just once this weekend, as it heads to the Army Black Knight Invitational in West Point, N.Y., on Sunday.
“We’re going to have a handful of guys in the [starting] lineup, and we’re trying to get as many as we can [to compete], and they’ve been gracious enough to work with us to help us get some different guys into the tournament. Most of it is set, but we still have a few more days of preparation and practices. Most of our squad will be there, for sure.”
What does Sanderson want his Penn State team to accomplish this weekend?
“Just get matches,” he said. “We can get in here and wrestle year round, all summer long and spring, whatever. But the best practice is just out there against our opponents. Different speeds, and
coming in with different game plans and techniques. So, yeah, we just look at everything as preparation for the next match. We’d love to have 20 guys in the finals. That would be awesome. I mean, that’s up to them, and we’ll see what happens.
“If they keep winning, they’re going to run into each other. So we’d like to see our guys face off as much as possible. Not really going there to wrestle each other. We’re going there to wrestle outside competition. But early on, this tournament’s been good for us to kind of get our guys in the same bracket and see how they do against similar competition. And, you know if they run into each other, that ends up giving us some information that we need moving forward.”
