STATE COLLEGE — Penn State will hold its annual Blue-White game on Saturday at Beaver Stadium. It starts at 2 p.m. ET. Blue-White Illustrated has previously reported on what fans can expect to encounter before that (which can be found again below). On Wednesday, head coach James Franklin offered insight into how things will work once his team takes the field.

“We will start with two skellies. Then the first quarter will go THUD, so everybody can get reps,” Franklin said. “Then we’ll transition second quarter, third quarter, fourth quarter will be live, so we can evaluate those guys in the stadium. Kicking will be on air like it’s been in the past.

“I think each quarter is maybe a minute shorter than it’s been than you guys are used to. And then it won’t be on TV. But it’ll be very similar kind of what we’ve done in the past.”

To translate a few of his comments: Skellies refers to 7-on-7 work. The first quarter THUD period will see players make form wrap-up tackles without taking the ball carrier to the ground. Players who are limited contact this spring and/or on a reduced workload will get reps without the live tackling. And, the quarters were 11 minutes each in 2023 and 2024. So, they may each be 10 minutes this year.
