Penn State has officially announced its jersey choice for the Fiesta Bowl. The Nittany Lions, who are the sixth seed in the College Football Playoff, will wear their traditional home blue uniforms despite being the visitors opposite three-seed Boise State in a Dec. 31 quarterfinal round matchup at State Farm Stadium.

The news has been expected since Broncos coach Spencer Danielson told the Rich Eisen Show earlier this month that the Moutain West Conference team would wear the combination it has for previous trips to Glendale, Ariz. Boise State, who by virtue of being the home team got to pick what uniform it wants to wear, will sport blue helmets, white jersey tops, and orange pants.

“I think I’ll be fired if I say we’re not going to wear that same jersey combination, so we’re going to roll with the blue-white-orange,” Danielson told the Rich Eisen Show per Idaho News.

During a Dec. 23 news conference, Danielson, who is the first-year leader of the Broncos program, offered more insight into the decision to go with what has been a Fiesta Bowl tradition for Boise State.

“There was no question about [the chosen combination,” he said. ” I’m a huge fan of the all blues, the all blacks, and the all whites. I have zero swag. I have zero feel of what people might want.

“I’m probably the wrong guy to ask, but I knew the second we were playing in the Fiesta Bowl, that wasn’t even going to be a conversation for me. I said, whatever we did prior, I know that’s what people are going to want. Let’s let the fans happy, and our guys will put it on and go to work.”

Penn State and Boise State got to Arizona on Saturday

Both teams altered their regular game week schedule some to account for the holiday season. Penn State was off on Dec. 24 before returning to State College for practice on the evening of Dec. 25. The Broncos, meanwhile, were off both days. They return to the practice field Dec. 26. Both team arrive in Glendale on Sat., Dec. 28 ahead of their matchup on Tue., Dec. 31.

“We practiced yesterday, kind of our normal Sunday practice, and then tried to help everybody get out of town,” Lions coach James Franklin said last Monday. “We went early in the morning so guys could get out of here. Coaches worked a full day, but tried to get the guys out of here so they could fly, drive wherever they were going. They’ll have off until Christmas Day evening. I want to make sure I term that the right way. We’ll have a team meeting and practice that evening. So it’s a little bit of time off for everybody.

“The coaches, we worked early this morning until this afternoon. Everybody’s heading out of the office now, get a couple hours of Christmas shopping, then be able to spend time with their family. And then after Christmas Day around 5 p.m., we’re getting in our normal game week.”
