Penn State news, notes, and updates for Sept. 17 include a recap of everything we learned about the Nittany Lions to start Kent State week. It’s time to dive into Tuesday’s top tweets and headlines about head coach James Franklin’s team and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

The first news conference of the week is in the books. Franklin spoke with reporters on Monday to kick off a few days of interviews ahead of the non-conference matchup with the Golden Flashes. The biggest news item of the day is that there is no update on the status of KJ Winston Jr., coming out of the bye week after he missed most of the Bowling Green game after starting due to an apparent injury. Franklin said he would have more to share after practice on Wednesday. He also said that receiver and punter returner Kaden Saunders is dealing with an injury that is impacting his role on game day.

“He’s had a lingering injury, and not that he’s not able to play, but he’s not able to play at 100 percent,” Franklin said. “So, he’s a guy that I think there’s a kind of excitement about him. There still is. But, he’s had a lingering injury that is slowing some of that progress, or some of that development, down.”

Penn State and Kent State meet at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. Big Ten Network will televise the game. After it, we will learn the official start time details for the Nittany Lions’ Week 5 meeting with Illinois. The conference opener will be in primetime. It will start at either 7 or 7:30 p.m. ET. The exact time plus television details will be announced late Saturday night.

Quote of the day

“Dae Dae Lane is the next guy that we’ve been trying to get to get reps for,” Franklin said. “Obviously, when you’re talking about Jay-Reed and Zakee, those two guys played a ton of football for us and will need to continue. Dae Dae is another guy that we’ve been trying to get more reps and more experience. That’ll be important. But, we’re going to have to develop a few more guys.

“We’ll see timing wise how this whole thing will play out. But definitely, for short term, we’re going to have to develop some more guys. So Dae Dae is going to be really important this week and obviously moving forward as well. He’s a guy that we’ve been trying to get more involved. We had planned on playing him more [against Bowling Green]. Didn’t play out that way, but, but he’s probably the guy that I would say our focus is on the most right now.”
