It’s match day again, Penn State fans. The No. 1 Nittany Lions close out the Big Ten portion of their 2023-2024 dual meet schedule today with what may ultimately be viewed as their toughest test during conference action. No. 4 Nebraska brings numerous ranked wrestlers into Rec Hall on Sunday for both programs’ penultimate match of the year.

“Nebraska is, I mean, a lot of these Big Ten teams have all been very similar,” Lions coach Cael Sanderson said Tuesday. “I mean, we just have to go be ourselves and wrestle and score those tough points and win tough matches, because they do have a really good team. They always do.

“Nebraska is always a really tough team. We’re looking forward to that match. I think it’s not like a surprise or anything. Looking at them coming into the season and what they’ve done for as long as I’ve been involved in college wrestling, they’re always one of the top programs.”

–141 pounds: No. 1 Beau Bartlett vs. No. 7 Brock Hardy

–149 pounds: No. 9 Tyler Kasak vs. No. 1 Ridge Lovett

–157 pounds: No. 1 Levi Haines vs. No. 7 Peyton Robb

–184 pounds: No. 6 Bernie Truax vs. No. 3 Lenny Pinto

In addition to those, there are numerous top 20 showdowns, as well. This match figures to be a doozy, even though the Lions are favored. On paper, the bout of the match comes at 184. In reality, we expect it to come at 157. Haines beat Robb twice last year. The first win came in a 3-1 sudden victory thriller to win the Big Ten title. The Nittany Lion then won again, 5-3, to reach the NCAA finals. Robb hasn’t forgotten those setbacks. And while he may not be the most likely challenger to knock off top-ranked Haines at nationals this year, expect him to come to wrestle Sunday at Rec Hall.
