What's the latest on Penn State quarterback Drew Allar ahead of Michigan State?
Penn State starting quarterback Drew Allar suffered an injury in last week’s 27-6 win over Rutgers that caused him to leave the game early in the third quarter. He was evaluated following an on-field collision that ended a running play in the sideline medical tent. He eventually emerged from it but never returned to the game. What is the latest on his status ahead of Friday’s regular season finale with Michigan State at Ford Field in Detroit?
“We expect Drew to go,” Franklin said. “Just like we planned on last week, I still think both of those guys will have roles. And, I think Beau will be ready to go. He did a great job. He didn’t flinch. And, went in and made plays like we expected him to make. We have not practiced yet since the game. But, all indications, I think we will be back to normal.”
Background on Drew Allar’s injury
Allar took off on what appeared to be a designed run and picked up eight yards before a collision with Scarlet Knights’ defender Flip Dixon in the third quarter. He was hit in the upper body, with contact on his right shoulder. Allar then threw an incomplete pass before exiting the game. He went right to the program’s sideline injury tent. When the Penn State quarterback emerged from it, he was clearly in pain as he tried to raise his right arm as far as he could while also moving his right shoulder in occasional circular motions. As the game progressed, he did seem to have more range of motion. But, the exact nature of the injury was not disclosed.
“As you guys know, I’m not going to get into medical stuff,” Franklin said after the game. “It would not be appropriate for Drew, for his family, but I don’t see this being significant. But, we will see.”
“What he had done the whole game, and the whole season, is get as many yards as he can and get down. He was just about to get down, and somebody got to him, and hit him just right. He was really good as the game went on. His leadership was phenomenal.”

With Allar out, Penn State went to Pribula
Allar’s classmate and backup, Beau Pribula, finished the game at quarterback for Penn State. He completed the only pass he attempted and also ran eight times for 71 yards and a touchdown in the win. Pribula may play even if Allar is back this week.
“When Drew got hurt and Beau came in, it opens things up for you in the run game,” Franklin said Saturday night. “We planned on playing both throughout that game. I thought when Beau came in he did a nice job.
“I thought we had a good plan. Some of our zone read stuff that we do, some of the similar things that we did against Iowa and thought there was carryover and make sense. When Beau would come in the game, they have to respect the zone read. It changes how you call the game defensively. And Drew’s done more of that as the season has gone on.”
