Penn State has picked a date for its next Blue-White game scrimmage. The annual spring practice finale will be held April 15, 2023 at Beaver Stadium.

“The intra-squad scrimmage is tentatively scheduled to kick in the early to mid-afternoon,” a program news release said.

“More details about Blue-White Game and related events will be announced after the 2022 season.”

Penn State closes out its latest slate in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 2. There, it will take on Utah. The PAC-12 champions are 9-3 on the year and have no mutual opponents with the Nittany Lions. The schools have never met before.

“Obviously the history and the tradition of the Rose Bowl speaks for itself,” Penn State coach James Franklin said two weeks ago. “Our players and staff could not be more excited about making the trip again. Obviously got a ton of respect for the University of Utah, their history, their tradition, and Coach has done a phenomenal job there. I was able to watch their game the other night, and what a great game for college football. They played so well and really played well all season long.

“Really good football team, coached extremely well, an experienced, gutsy quarterback who’s a competitor, and this is going to be a great game.”

Penn State-Utah closes out both teams’ seasons

The kickoff for the Rose Bowl is set for 5 p.m. ET on ESPN. As of Monday, the Utes are a three-point favorite. Both schools are dealing with opt-outs and injuries. The Lions won’t have corner Joey Porter Jr., because of the former and receiver Parker Washington because of the latter. Utah, meanwhile, will definitely be without tight end Dalton Kincaid, who is off to the NFL. It may also be without All-American corner Clark Phillips III, who has declared for the pros but has not revealed his bowl game participation plans.

“We’re going to travel well,” Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. “Our fans are going to be showing up, and we should have great support there. Players, like I said, are very excited to go back and have the experience again, and we’re just looking forward to the trip.

“Penn State, a tremendous opponent. Been doing a little research on them. Play great defense, a couple really good backs, nearly 1,000 yards each, turnover margin in their favor. They do a lot of really good things, things that really good football teams do.”
