We start with the men’s basketball team. Head coach Micah Shrewsberry’s No. 10 Nittany Lions entered Thursday night’s NCAA Tournament opener as a 2.5-point underdog opposite No. 7 Texas A&M. They ended it with a resounding 76-59 victory over the Aggies. Andrew Funk had a historic shooting night, as he connected on eight triples and scored 27 overall. The win moves Penn State onto Round 2. There, it will face No. 2 Texas. Tip-off is set for 7:45 p.m. ET from the Wells Fargo Center in Des Moines, Iowa. CBS will televise the contest to a national audience.
In other news, the Penn State wrestling team sent nine competitors to the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Seven of them are still alive to win their respective weight classes. Roman Bravo-Young (133 pounds), Beau Bartlett (141), Shayne Van Ness (149), Levi Haines (165), Carter Starocci (174), Aaron Brooks (184), and Greg Kerkvliet (heavyweight) all won two matches Thursday to move into Friday afternoon quarterfinals round. Max Dean is in the consolation bracket at 197. And, Alex Facundo is eliminated at 165.
