Penn State tweets of the day

It’s a rankings-themed edition of the newsstand. We start with the latest InterMat rankings. A Nittany Lion is ranked in all 10 weight classes. The biggest change this week is seeing defending 285-pound champ Greg Kerkvliet drop from No. 1 to No. 2 after multi-time NCAA champ and Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson announced that he was returning for one final collegiate season last week. Here’s the full Penn State rundown. The number in paratheses indicates where the wrestler was last week. And, do note that there is an ongoing competition for the top jobs at 157 and 197 pounds despite who is ranked:

125 pounds: Luke Lilledahl, No. 33 (NR)

133 pounds: Braeden Davis, No. 7 (7)

141 pounds: Beau Bartlett, No. 3 (3)

149 pounds: Shanye Van Ness, No. 2 (2)

Quote of the day

“I think it’s fluid. I think it’s just up to the to the guys and how they compete. And then, every time we’re wrestling, you don’t want this to be a tryout every time you wrestle, right? But, you know, unfortunately, that’s just part of the reality of everything that we do. So you want good head-to-head [matches]. Head-to-head matches give you great insight. And then how they’re doing against outside competition.

“Really, a big thing for us in determining your team as we head into March, which we’ve got a long, long time before then, is just, how are they competing? Where are they trending? What kind of enthusiasm are they stepping out there with? Are they trying to get better? Those kinds of things will kind of determine where they’re going to end up. We just try to factor in all things. But it’s definitely not an easy decision.”
