Nine Penn State wrestling connections have earned a seed in their Senior men’s freestyle bracket for the 2025 U.S. Open. That info headlines today’s newsstand.

For those who are unaware, the U.S. Open is one of the qualifiers for Final X, which is held in June and ultimately helps determine the Team USA lineup for the World Championships and also the Olympic team in years when the summer games are held.

Penn State sophomore-to-be Luke Lilledahl is the top seed at 57 kilograms (125.6 pounds). By winning this tournament, he would earn the right to face Spencer Lee in a best-of-three match at Final X.

“I just like to compete, right? So I want to compete in everything, and I want to compete at the highest level,” Lilledahl said after the NCAA Championships back in March. “So if I win the Senior Open and I wrestle in Final X, that’d be great. That’d be really amazing.”

Nittany Lions Class of 2025 signee Marcus Blaze is the top seed at 61 kilograms (134.4 pounds). Like Lilledahl, he can earn a Final X date, opposite Vito Arujau, by winning the U.S Open.

Lee and Arujau are the only eligible senior-level wrestlers who accepted their Final X invitation. The rest of the Final X matchups will be determined by the U.S. Open first, and then the U.S. World Team Trials Challenge Tournament in May. Winners of both events will meet at Final X. Penn State connections vying to win the U.S. Open and earn a Final X spot have the following seeds:

Nico Megaludis: No. 7 at 61 kilograms

Beau Bartlett: No. 3 at 65 kilograms

Mitchell Mesenbrink No. 2, Terrell Barraclough No. 6 at 75 kilograms

Kyle Dake No. 1, Rocco Welsh No. 5 at 86 kilograms

Kyle Snyder: No. 1 at 97 kilograms.

The men’s freestyle division at the U.S. Open starts competition Friday. The finals are on Saturday.

Quote of the day

“He said that he went up there and just loved everything about their coaches and the atmosphere. Everything that Coach Franklin presented and what Coach Dex said really fit what he’s looking for. I told him it’s a great choice. I mean, how could you go wrong playing for Coach Franklin and Dex? Our success rate sending guys to Penn State has been very good, and no matter where Dex has been, he’s always taken care of DeMatha guys.”
