Where did former Penn State WR Tyler Johnson end up signing after entering the transfer portal?
Former Penn State wide receiver Tyler Johnson entered the transfer portal this past Monday. Now, just five days later, On3’s Pete Nakos confirmed that the Martinsville, Va., native is headed to the American Athletic Conference to play for East Carolina.
A former four-star prospect by On3 in the Class of 2022, Johnson emerged on the staff’s radar in June 2021. For just that one year, the NCAA allowed coaches to evaluate players in a non-camp setting following the COVID-19 pandemic. It proved to be a good decision for Johnson at the time, running a 4.4-second 40-yard dash and a 4.2-second shuttle. That led to him taking an official visit to Penn State just two days later, and he ultimately ended up committing shortly after.

However, once he officially joined the team, the 6-foot, 185-pound receiver didn’t contribute at all during his first two years on campus. That began to change this past season, as Johnson totaled 78 snaps at receiver, most of which were late in games. He was targeted just once in the game against Maryland at the end of November and didn’t record a reception. The redshirt sophomore will now have two years of eligibility remaining with the Pirates.
Johnson was one of four scholarship wide receivers on Penn State’s 2024 roster that entered the transfer portal following the season. Harrisburg native Mehki Flowers left the team the same day as Johnson, Jan. 13. Then, two of last year’s starters at the position, Trey Wallace and Omari Evans, both entered the portal two days later on Jan. 15.

All three have yet to sign with a new school, but we know Wallace visited Ole Miss on Friday. He was then expected to visit Texas A&M today, Jan. 18, followed by South Carolina tomorrow. Texas Tech and Syracuse are the two schools that have been linked with Evans.
Penn State is also bringing in two wide receivers via the portal. Former USC wideout Kyron Hudson announced that he’d be joining the Nittany Lions back on Dec. 16. James Franklin and his staff followed that up by adding former Troy wide receiver Devonte Ross on Dec. 24.
Overall, Penn State brought in six players via the transfer portal and had nine outgoing players this year. In addition to their two starting wide receivers, the Nittany Lions also lost two other regular contributors in quarterback Beau Pribula, who signed with Missouri, and cornerback Cam Miller, who ended up at Rutgers.
