Penn State tweets of the day

FloWrestling has updated their 2024-2025 college rankings with the season now less than a month away. All told, Penn State has a wrestler ranked in nine of 10 weight classes. It also has six in the pound-for-pound top 20 rankings. That list includes the nation’s No. 1 overall grappler, senior Carter Starocci, who is bumping up to 184 pounds this year with hopes of becoming the first five-time NCAA champ. Also making the cut is heavyweight Greg Kerkvliet at No. 5, junior Levi Haines, who is moving up to 174 pounds this year and checks in at No. 6 overall, senior Beau Bartlett (No. 9), sophomore Mitchell Mesenbrink (No. 11), and sophomore Shayne Van Ness (No. 18).

Here are the full rankings:

125 pounds: No Nittany Lion listed. Freshman Luke Lilledahl is expected to man this spot for the Lions.

133 pounds: Sophomore Braeden Davis checks in at No. 10. Last year’s 125-pound starter is expected to bump up one weight class and take over for incumbent Aaron Nagao.

141 pounds: Senior Bartlett is No. 3 behind Northern Colorado senior Andrew Alirez, who returns to the top spot after an Olympic redshirt season a year ago, and Ohio State’s Jesse Mendez, who beat Bartlett in the NCAA final a year ago.

149 pounds: Van Ness is No. 2 behind Virginia Tech’s Caleb Henson.

157 pounds: Last year’s 149-pound starter, Tyler Kasak, is bumping up a weight. FLO ranks him at No. 4.

165 pounds: Mesenbrink is No. 1.

174 pounds: Last year’s 157-pound champ, Levi Haines, is set to bump up to this weight class. He is ranked No. 2 behind Missouri senior Keegan O’Toole.

184 pounds: Starocci is No. 1.

197 pounds: This is the long question mark in the Lions’ lineup. Flo ranks returner Lucash Cochran at No. 20.

285 pounds: Kerkvliet is No. 1.

Quote of the day

“The bye week was good. Was able to get a ton of work done not only from a self-scout perspective, but also really from a recruiting perspective as well. Obviously this is going to be a big week for us.

“So had good practice on Sunday. A little bit different practice model. Obviously not having the previous game to watch film on or do corrections, able to get a little bit more of a head start on Wisconsin. Then we’ll have practice tomorrow.”
