Penn State fans came into the weekend optimistic that head coach James Franklin and his team could prove that the preseason hype surrounding the Nittany Lions was truly different this year. Instead, it ended up being a similar story to previous years, with Penn State losing to both Ohio State and Michigan for the third consecutive year.

Following the loss to the second-ranked Wolverines, Penn State dropped three spots to No. 12 in the Coaches Poll. The Nittany Lions remain the third-ranked team in the Big Ten, and if they’re in a similar position in the updated College Football Playoff Poll, they’ll still be in a strong position to make a New Year’s Six Bowl. The Lions are also the third-ranked team with two losses, with Oregon State at No. 10 and Missouri at No. 11.

With both Michigan and Ohio State winning, you won’t find many changes at the top of the Big Ten, with each staying at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Iowa, who improved to 8-2 with a 22-0 win over Rutgers, rejoined the poll at No. 23.

In the SEC, both Ole Miss and Tennessee lost over the weekend, dropping them to No. 14 and No. 19, respectively. Utah also dropped two spots to No. 16 following its loss to Washington.
