Penn State will head into its first bye week of the season at 2-0 and ranked No. 8 in the country following Sunday’s release of the updated Associated Press Poll.

The Nittany Lions struggled with Bowling Green throughout the majority of the game, but as Penn State head coach James Franklin pointed out after the game, the Falcons have upset multiple teams in recent years.

“You got to give Bowling Green a ton of credit,” said Franklin. “We talked about it during the week. In the last three years, they beat Minnesota, they beat Georgia Tech. Michigan last year was 14 to 6 at the half. [They have] 32 seniors, and got to give them credit. They played their tail off. The moment wasn’t too big for them. The opening drive showed that, and we were at a dogfight.”

Close games against smaller programs was a theme Saturday, as Alabama led USF by just a point heading into the fourth quarter before pulling away late. Oklahoma barely survived against Houston, while Oregon was pushed by Boise State but ultimately won 37-34.

Penn State was actually the only Big Ten program in the Top 10 that didn’t move down in Sunday’s update. That includes Ohio State, as Texas leapfrogged the Buckeyes following the win over Michigan. The Wolverines dropped seven spots to No. 17, while Oregon dropped two spots to No. 9 following another closer than expected result.
