Penn State head coach James Franklin and his staff pulled off a massive commitment Friday with the announcement that Top 50 overall prospect Andrew Olesh has flipped his commitment from Michigan.

A consensus four-star prospect, Olesh is ranked No. 55 nationally, No. 3 overall at the tight end position and No. 1 in Pennsylvania according to On3’s Industry Rankings. On3 actually rates him slightly higher, coming in at No. 43 nationally, No. 2 at the tight end position and No. 1 overall in the state.

The addition of Olesh also moved Penn State up one spot in On3’s Team Rankings, climbing to No. 15 nationally with an overall class grade of 90.494. The Nittany Lions have officially signed 26 players to its Class of 2025, while Olesh hasn’t yet been announced. It’s made up of 13 four-star prospects and 14 three-star prospects.

Understanding On3’s Team Rankings

For those unfamiliar with On3’s Team Rankings, there are two major differences compared to other sites that you need to know.

1) We use the Industry Rankings, which puts together all four major recruiting sites – On3, 247, Rivals and ESPN – to find a cumulative score for each prospect. It’s not just based on On3’s rankings.

2) On3’s Team Recruiting Rankings solve the problem of varying class sizes during the recruiting cycle by totaling the highest-rated commitments for each team based on a rolling average of current total commitments among Power Four schools. That average is currently at 17 prospects.

So, if you’re wondering why Penn State ranks lower at On3 when compared to sites like 247 and Rivals, it’s because we’re aiming to project where the Nittany Lions are on pace to finish come National Signing Day.

Around the Big Ten

The Big Ten finished with three schools in the Top 10 of On3’s Team Rankings. Oregon finished top of the conference and No. 3 overall nationally, signing 21 prospects overall. The class is made up of four five-star prospects, 16 four-star players and just one three-star. In addition to five-star wide receivers Dakorien Moore and Dallas Wilson, the Ducks also locked up defensive backs Na’eem Offord, Trey McNutt and Brandon Finney. All five of those prospects rank among the Top 40 nationally.

Ohio State finished second in the conference No. 5 overall with 26 players in the class. They signed two five-star prospects and 18 four-star players. Notable prospects included quarterback Tavien St. Clair, cornerback Devin Sanchez and wide receiver Quincy Porter.

Michigan was up to No. 6 in the rankings but are now at No. 9 following the loss of Olesh. The Wolverines added two five-star players and 13 four-star prospects. Of course, the prize of the class is the No. 1 ranked player in the country after Michigan flipped quarterback Bryce Underwood a few weeks ago from LSU. They also added five-star offensive tackle Andrew Babalola down the stretch.

USC was the only other Big Ten program to finish ahead of Penn State. The Trojans finished with a 90.516 overall score compared to Penn State’s 90.494. USC added 21 players total, including two five-star prospects and nine four-star players. Defensive lineman Jahkeem Stewart and quarterback Husan Longstreet both rank among the Top 20 nationally.
