Where does Penn State rank in the first College Football Playoff Poll for 2023?
Penn State heads into Week 10 of the college football season at No. 9 nationally in both the Associated Press Poll and the Coaches Poll. However, neither of those polls matter all that much anymore, as the first College Football Playoff Poll for the 2023-2024 season was released Tuesday evening.
Many wondered if the Nittany Lions would rank in the Top 10 with no ranked wins and just one loss to Ohio State. It turns out that they’re just outside, as head coach James Franklin and his team sit at No. 11 nationally in the first CFP Poll.
Similar to both the AP and Coaches Polls, the Big Ten has three teams in the top half of the poll, with both Ohio State and Michigan at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. Although the Buckeyes already got the best of Penn State, the Nittany Lions still have the opportunity for a marquee win in a few weeks from now when Michigan comes to Beaver Stadium on Nov. 11.

In addition to the Buckeyes and Wolverines, Georgia and Florida State are the other two schools that make up the top four. Georgia will host a Missouri squad that’s 7-1 and ranked No. 12 this upcoming weekend. Florida State travels north to take on a struggling Pitt team that’s now 2-6 on the year. The Seminoles are 21.5-point favorites, while Georgia is a 15.5-point favorite against Mizzou.
If the Nittany Lions are going to crack the Top 10 ahead of its game against Michigan, they’ll need to rebound this weekend following a lackluster performance against Indiana. According to sportsbooks, Mike Locksley and his team are expected to give Penn State a challenge this weekend. Despite the Terps losing to Northwestern and Illinois in recent weeks, the Lions are only 10-point favorites. That’s the lowest they’ve been favored in any game so far this season.
