Penn State will learn its fate in the College Football Playoff this upcoming Sunday, but where exactly they’ll start out is now up in the air following a berth in the Big Ten Championship Saturday night. It won’t be an easy task taking on the No. 1 ranked Oregon Ducks, but James Franklin and his team are also playing with house money. Now ranked No. 3 in the CFP Poll, the Nittany Lions are in this year’s playoff. Even a loss should still see them host a playoff game the weekend of Dec. 20-21.

But this weekend’s results in every conference championship game will have a big impact on how the actual bracket looks. However, after Tuesday night’s release, Penn State is currently projected to face Arizona State at home to open up the playoffs. It would be a matchup between the 5th seed and 12th seed.

The other first-round matchups currently would be 11th seed Alabama at No. 6th seed Notre Dame, 9th seed Tennessee at 8th seed Ohio State and 10th seed Indiana at 7th seed Georgia. The projected top four seeds that would receive automatic spots in the Rose, Sugar, Peach and Fiesta Bowls are No. 1 seed Oregon, No. 2 seed Texas, No. 3 seed SMU and No. 4 seed Boise State. Win or lose, the Ducks and Longhorns are safe bets to make it either way, but Boise State and Arizona State have to win their conference championship games if they’re going to receive that extra time off. Clemson defeating SMU could also cause some havoc.

Of course, this past weekend was all about Ohio State’s loss to Michigan. Ryan Day’s team came into the game as 20-point favorites but still couldn’t shake the demons that have haunted them against rival Michigan the past four seasons. However, at No. 6 in the poll, the Buckeyes look to be safe bets to host a home playoff game.
