Where does Penn State rank in the updated Coaches Poll?
Penn State wrapped up its regular season with an 11-1 record Saturday, beating up on Maryland at home to win 44-7. That, combined with Michigan’s upset over Ohio State on the road, has the Nittany Lions now headed to Indianapolis to play Oregon next week in the Big Ten Championship.
With the Buckeyes now dropping down to No. 8 in the Coaches Poll, Penn State moves up one spot to No. 3. A win over No. 1 Oregon next Saturday would not only assure that James Franklin and his team get a first-round bye, but it would also guarantee that the Nittany Lions play in the Rose Bowl to open up the playoffs on Jan. 1. Of course, a loss would also open up the opportunity for a home playoff game on the weekend of Dec. 20-21. Either way, fans have plenty of reason to be excited.
In addition to Ohio State losing, the other surprise result of the day involved Miami, which was previously ranked No. 7 in the poll and is now down to No. 14. The Hurricanes took a 21-0 lead against Syracuse early in the second quarter, only to end up losing 42-38. Not only did that drop Miami to 10-2 on the season, but it also allowed Clemson to now face SMU in the ACC Championship.
Coming into the weekend, Georgia was already locked into the SEC Championship, but the Bulldogs needed multiple overtimes against rival Georgia Tech on Friday night to get its 10th win of the season. They’ll now face Texas for the SEC title next Saturday. The Longhorns dominated Texas A&M in College Station last night, outgaining the Aggies 461 to 248. The winners of the Big Ten and SEC Championship games should end up earning the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the playoff.
