Penn State remains undefeated following a 21-7 win Saturday night against an Illinois team that came into the game ranked 19th in the Associated Press Poll. Not only did the Nittany Lions move up two spots to No. 7 in this week’s poll, but the Fighting Illini also stayed ranked, dropping to No. 24. That could prove to be valuable for PSU’s College Football Playoff resume if the Illini continue having success in the weeks ahead.

After allowing an 11-play, 75-yard drive for the Illini to open the game, the Nittany Lions defense not only shut Illinois out for the rest of the game, but they also gave up just 144 yards the rest of the night. Penn State’s defensive front was excellent, totaling 13 tackles for loss and seven sacks. They also held Illinois to just 34 yards rushing on 32 carries.

There were two Top 10 programs in the SEC that suffered losses Saturday. Ole Miss’ loss to Kentucky looked like the game of the day until Georgia rallied back from a 30-7 deficit at halftime against Alabama to take the lead with just over two minutes to play. However, the Crimson Tide responded with a 75-yard touchdown pass to freshman Ryan Williams on the very next play. Carson Beck then threw an interception with under a minute to play, giving Alabama a 41-34 win. The Crimson Tide are now the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, while Georgia dropped to No. 5.

The Big Ten’s top schools all held serve on Saturday. Ohio State stayed undefeated following a 38-7 win over Michigan State. The Buckeyes are ranked No. 3 nationally. Oregon also had no issues with Penn State’s next opponent, UCLA. The Ducks, who are now ranked No. 6 nationally, won 34-13 and outgained the Bruins 431 yards to just 172. Both Michigan and USC also won, while Indiana joined the AP Poll at No. 23 this week.
