Where does Penn State rank in the updated Coaches Poll?
Penn State moved up one spot to No. 4 in the Coaches Poll following a dominant win over Purdue Saturday afternoon. Up 21-3 at halftime, the Nittany Lions followed a similar script to so many other wins this season, dominating the third quarter on both sides of the ball. Not only did they score touchdowns on all three drives, but Penn State’s defense held Purdue to just 35 yards, forcing them to punt on all four drives that started in the third.
“Defensively, we continue to play dominant third quarter football. Ten plays for 35 yards, but that also has to do with our offense-sustaining drives,” said head coach James Franklin after the game.
With Indiana off this week, each of the other two Big Ten programs within the Top 25 also won, although top-ranked Oregon needed ten unanswered points in the fourth quarter to escape Madison with a win over Wisconsin. No. 2 Ohio State had no issues on the road against Northwestern.
Elsewhere, there were plenty of upsets, as BYU, who was previously No. 8 in the Coaches Poll, lost late night to Kansas at home, 17-13. With games against No. 22 Arizona State and Houston remaining, BYU still controls its destiny if they win out, but next week’s game against the Sun Devils is essentially now an elimination game for both teams. The Cougars are now ranked No. 15 in the Coaches Poll.
Tennessee also lost on the road to Georgia to drop to 8-2 on the season, dropping the Volunteers to No. 11 in the Coaches Poll. Texas and Texas A&M are both 5-1 in the conference, while Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and Ole Miss all have two losses, setting up a wild finish in the SEC.
