Penn State dropped its second game of the 2023 season Saturday, losing to Michigan at home, 24-15. While the loss officially knocks James Franklin’s team out of contention for the College Football Playoff, the Lions are still in contention to return to a New Year’s Six Bowl, as Penn State is now ranked No. 12 in the CFP Poll following this week’s update.

Elsewhere in the Big Ten, both Ohio State and Michigan remain undefeated and control their fate to make this year’s playoff. The Buckeyes are ranked No. 2, with Michigan at No. 3. Iowa improved to 8-2 over the weekend and is also ranked at No. 16. The Hawkeyes are Penn State’s lone Top 25 win of the season. They defeated Penn State’s upcoming opponent in Rutgers this past weekend, 22-0. The Scarlett Knights come into this weekend’s game at Penn State with a 6-4 record.

Hot Board: Who could Penn State target as its next offensive coordinator?

With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, bowl projections are now beginning to have some significance. With both the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl hosting semifinal games this year, conference tie-ins aren’t as prevalent this season as they have been in recent years. In fact, the Orange Bowl is the only remaining New Year’s Six Bowl that has true conference tie-ins for 2023. That game will feature the ACC vs. either a Big Ten or SEC team. That leaves the Fiesta, Cotton and Peach Bowls all with At-Large spots to add teams from any conference.

The Chik-fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta, which has never hosted Penn State, has become a popular pick by most national analysts following this past weekend’s games. ESPN, CBS and The Action Network all picked Penn State to end up in that bowl this week. Who the opponent would be remains up in the air, however.

Moving forward, the College Football Playoff Selection Committee will release its updated rankings following this weekend’s game next Tuesday, Nov. 21, and then again on Nov. 28 following the regular season. Once conference championship games conclude the weekend of Dec. 1-2, the committee will release its final selections for both the playoff and the remaining New Year’s Six bowl games on Sunday, Dec. 3.
