Penn State picked up three new commitments last week, putting the Nittany Lions back inside the Top 10 of On3’s Team Rankings.

With the addition of four-star prospects Tyseer Denmark and Josiah Brown, James Franklin and Penn State’s entire staff have earned commitments from 11 four-star players as of last weekend. On Thursday, that number climbed to 12 as quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer made a big jump in On3’s Industry Rankings following 247Sports’ decision to move Grunkemeyer inside its Top247 rankings. The Nittany Lions also sit at No. 9 as a team with an overall grade of 90.976.

With Grunkemeyer now ranked No. 200 overall nationally at 247, his Industry Ranking jumped from No. 462 nationally to No. 286. He went from the 13th-ranked player in the class to ninth.

Tight end Luke Reynolds also made a significant jump in the Industry Rankings. Not only did he climb from No. 80 nationally to No. 49 at 247Sports, but Reynolds also earned a fourth-star at ESPN. He’s now Penn State’s fourth-ranked player in the class and sits at No. 222 nationally in the Industry Ranking.

Understanding On3’s Team Rankings

For those unfamiliar with On3’s Team Rankings, there are two major differences compared to other sites that you need to know.

1) We use the Industry Rankings, which uses all four major recruiting sites – On3, 247, Rivals and ESPN – to find a commutative score. It’s not based on just On3’s rankings.

2) On3’s Team Recruiting Rankings solve the problem of varying class sizes during the recruiting cycle by totaling the highest-rated commitments for each team based on a rolling average of current total commitments among Power 5 schools. Currently, that average total is 12 players. It was 11 just a week ago, as more and more commitments come with summer official visits now complete.

So, if you’re wondering why Penn State is lower at On3 when compared to 247 and Rivals, which both have the Lions at No. 6 overall, it’s because we’re aiming to project where Penn State will truly finish come National Signing Day, not where they rank at this moment simply because they have more commitments than most other schools.

Where does Penn State rank in the Big Ten?

Penn State isn’t the only team to move around in the Big Ten.

Ohio State still has the top-ranked class in the conference, climbing from No. 3 to No. 2.

The Buckeyes hold two five-star commitments and now 12 four-stars for an average score of 93.160. Tight end Damarion Witten and cornerback Bryce West both committed last Saturday.

Michigan, however, has dropped two spots from No. 5 overall to No. 7. That’s partly because USC continues to climb, as the Trojans are up to No. 5 now with 15 total commitments.

Nebraska is also starting to add some talent, climbing up to No. 18 in the rankings. The Cornhuskers added their most important player yet, former PSU recruit Carter Nelson, just yesterday.

Purdue (No. 24), Wisconsin (No. 27), Iowa (No. 30) round out the Top 30 nationally.
