Penn State news, notes, and updates for May 8 include a consensus post-spring top 25 rundown, headlines of the day, and more. FootballScoop averaged out lists from On3’s Andy Staples, FOX’s Joel Klatt, CBS Sports, Athlon Sports, and 247Sports to come up with its pre-preseason rankings. The Nittany Lions check in at No. 2. Klatt had them the highest at No. 1. And, Staples headlines the list of analysts who put them as low as No. 4.

It feels like we’ve had a few “If not now, when?” seasons for James Franklin as he heads into Year 12 at Penn State, now nearly a decade removed from his lone B1G title and his last win over Ohio State,” Zach Barnett writes for FootballScoop. “Penn State will have arguably the best front seven in college football and arguably the best backfield in college football, with a revamped receiver room. Will it be enough to get over the hump?”

It’s been safe to say for a while now, but the 12th version of James Franklin’s Nittany Lions will be in the top five of the first Associated Press poll this summer, barring something unexpected. If so, it will be the first time that is the case under Franklin. The previous program high in the AP preseason poll dating back to 2014 is No. 6 in 2017. Also, for what it is worth, PSU has the third-best odds to win this year’s College Football Playoff at FanDuel.

Penn State kicks off the 2025 college football season opposite Nevada on Aug. 30. A kick time is not yet set for the clash, which will be played at Beaver Stadium.

Quote of the day

“I’m very familiar with Coach (Jim) Knowles and Coach (James) Franklin. The things they’ve been able to put on paper with Chop Robinson and Abdul Carter and Tony Rojas and the background of producing linebackers is amazing.”
