Where is Penn State in the latest round of post-spring top 25 rankings?: Newsstand
Penn State news, notes, and updates for May 22 include two more post-spring top 25 rankings, headlines of the day, and more.
It’s time to dive into Wednesday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.
Penn State tweets of the day
We start with another round of post-spring, post-portal top 25 rankings from media members. First, On3 host and national writer Andy Staples put his list out on Tuesday. He puts Penn State at No. 12. Ohio State leads the way at No. 1. Other Big Ten teams ahead of the Nittany Lions include Oregon (No. 4) and Michigan (No. 6).
“If Penn State actually finishes in this spot, the fan base would be apoplectic,” Staples writes. “Because of the CFP selection rules, this would be the first team out since I don’t have any Group of 5 teams ranked between one and 11. The challenge for Penn State — the team that would have made the CFP six times since 2016 had the current system been in place — is to prove it can generate a dynamic enough offense to match what should be an excellent defense. If the Nittany Lions can, they’ll finish above this spot and make the CFP. If not, the ennui deepens.”
ESPN also has its latest top 25 out. Mark Schlbach also has the Lions at No. 12. He has Georgia at No. 1. Only the Buckeyes (No. 2), the Ducks (No. 4), and the Wolverines (No. 10) are ahead of James Franklin’s program.

Major College Football Playoff implications
“Somebody has to challenge Ohio State, Michigan and Oregon in the Big Ten, and with Washington rebuilding, I’ll go with Penn State for now,” Schlabach writes. “The Nittany Lions have struggled to score against good teams (Michigan and Ohio State), so coach James Franklin hired Kansas offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki to boost the passing game, which ranked 80th in the FBS with 215 yards per game.”

Quote of the day
“It is time for Penn State to catch up to its peers. It should be a model for the college and NFL world with innovation, experiences that are different and exciting, and technology. To put it simply, renovations to Beaver Stadium are long overdue. It’s time to act. And, it’s time to act now.”
