Penn State parted ways with former receivers coach Taylor Stubblefield back in January. Now, the multi-year Nittany Lions assistant has a new job.

Stubblefield is taking the same position at Air Force, The Athletic reported Wednesday. It marks his second stop in Colorado Springs under longtime Falcons head coach Troy Calhoun. Stubblefield previously worked there during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Lions coach James Franklin declined to go into details in early February about his decision to move on from Stubblefield, who he hired before the 2020 season. The 10th-year leader of the Lions simply said “as you guys know, I try to share as much as I possibly can with [the media] that I think is appropriate. I don’t necessarily think that is appropriate in this setting.”

Stubblefield did weigh in on his departure

For his part, Stubblefield released a statement about his departure in mid-January.

“As my time at Penn State has drawn to a close, I want to extend a debt of gratitude to all of my players for trusting me, buying in, allowing me to coach them, and for giving me their all,” Stubblefield wrote. “I’m so proud of the contributions the wide receivers have made to this team. It has been an honor to help develop a first-round draft pick, at this institution, for the first time since 2003.

“I’m thrilled that a Penn State receiver, now holds the record for the longest reception in Rose Bowl history. It’s humbling to have been a part of one of the highest ranked recruiting classes in Penn State history, that included five wide receivers. I’m proud of the kids whose names are etched in the Penn State record books. And finally, I am elated to have been part of a team that went 11-2, culminating in a Rose Bowl victory.”

Penn State picked Marques Hagans to replace Stubblefield

Stubblefield left the Lions on Jan. 15. On Jan. 23, Penn State announced it was hiring Marques Hagans away from Virginia, which is his alma mater.

“I will tell you that our excitement for Marques Hagans is really high,” Franklin said. “If you look at his resumé, he’s got a really good resumé. I think you guys are going to really enjoy getting to know him. Ultimately the most important thing is you bring the best people you possibly can into your organization. The most talented people. And, you help them grow.

“I think he’s pretty far along professionally and there are some areas that I think we can help him as well. Part of that is just when you’ve been at the same institution your entire career, just getting out and being in a different environment also helps you because forces you out of your comfort zone.”

Penn State begins spring practice on March 14.
