Where will Penn State land in the first AP top 25?: Newsstand

Penn State tweets of the day
We start with On3 national college football columnist Jesse Simonton’s Associated Press top 25 projection. The official version will come out next Monday. Penn State has been inside the preseason top 20 six times in the James Franklin era. It figures to be again this year, too, with Simonton slotting the Nittany Lions at No. 9. It’s the same spot they hold in the initial USA Today Coaches Poll.
“Same question, different year: Can Penn State finally break through and truly contend for a championship (Big Ten and national)? The 12-team playoff was created precisely to give programs like Penn State a better chance at a championship, but that means James Franklin & Co., must start winning some games as slight underdogs,” Simonton writes. “The Nittany Lions’ defense projects to be elite again, so any ceilings shattered will be determined by the growth of quarterback Drew Allar under new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki. “
Penn State has made a total of 49 preseason top-25 appearances. That means, next Monday at Noon, it can hit the milestone of 50 such appearances.

“Through practice, you can start to see, ‘Okay, this kid got it.’ Or through practice, you can say, ‘Oh, this kid doesn’t have it and isn’t ready yet.’ So I feel good where all of them are at right now,” said Poindexter. “They know they’re in a competition.
