Five former Penn State football players will be among the 329 pro football draft hopefuls on hand for this year’s NFL Combine. Tight end Tyler Warren, defensive end Abdul Carter, linebacker Kobe King, and safeties KJ Winston Jr., and Jaylen Reed will all be in Indianapolis for a few days of testing, interviews, medical check-ups, and more later this month. The event runs Feb. 24 – March 3. Live coverage from the NFL Network starts on Feb. 27 at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Some of the Nittany Lions who are now aiming to make it to the next level without a Combine invite include cornerback Jalen Kimber, defensive tackles Coziah Izzard and Dvon J-Thomas, defensive end Amin Vanover, receiver Julian Fleming, guard Sal Wormley, and linebacker Tyler Elsdon. All will work out at Penn State Pro Day. That annual event, which attracts scouts from most if not every NFL team, will take place sometime in March. An official date is not yet set.

Top Penn State storylines at the NFL Combine
Carter and Warren are locked in as first-round selections. So, it will be interesting to see how much of the on-field testing they do in Indy. In recent years, it has become trendy for top potential picks to either pick and choose what they do or skip the workouts entirely. It would be a surprise if either former Penn State player fell into the latter category. But, time will tell. Current mock drafts have Carter angling to be the No. 1 selection. At worst, he is going in the top five, barring something unexpected. Warren is seen as a likely top-10 pick and top-15 selection at worst.
It goes without saying that King, Reed, and Winston Jr., will have the most to prove at Lucas Oil Stadium. And, of that group, all eyes will be focused on Winston Jr. He played just five quarters and change this year. ESPN reported a partially torn ACL ended his season early. It also said earlier this year that he would be cleared for the Combine. Will that be the case? Many will wonder until he arrives. King and Reed, of course, will try to boost their stock in front of pro scouts, too. They have plenty to prove and potentially gain, as well.
