Penn State news, notes, and updates for Feb. 13 include a list of breakout candidates nationally that includes a Nittany Lion, headlines of the day, and more. It’s time to dive into Thursday’s top tweets and headlines about the team and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

On3’s Ari Wasserman is taking an early crack at predicting the breakout starts of the 2025 season. One second-year Nittany Lion made the cut: Tight end Luke Reynolds.

The position group is full of intrigue in the Penn State offense after all that Tyler Warren accomplished in 2024 that has him on the cusp of being a first-round NFL Draft pick. Khalil Dinkins returns as the clear veteran in the room. Reynolds played plenty in year one with Andrew Rappleyea sidelined, and his status for spring practice is not yet clear. Joey Schlaffer also returns for position coach Ty Howle, who added early enrollees Andrew Olesh and Brian Kortovich, plus summer arrival Matt Henderson in the Class of 2025.

“Reynolds, a former high-end four-star prospect in the 2024 class, is stepping in now that Warren is off to the NFL,” Wasserman writes. “In his first year as Penn State’s tight end starter, he joins a Nittany Lions offense that is loaded with talent between quarterback Drew Allar and running backs Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen. Penn State is still in the market for a reliable, consistent pass-catcher. Reynolds, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound athlete, could be in a prime spot for a bunch of passes this year.”

Quote of the day

“They thought I was a good enough player to do it and to fill behind the other safeties,” Belgrave-Shorter said Tuesday. “But it took me some time, because I never played safety in high school. I always played corner. And I love playing corner, going in front of receiver, playing man, setting the edge, that was the thing. But I had to think about it. And safety is what I want to do now.”
