The Penn State football team was back in Holuba Hall on Tuesday morning for its third winter workout session of the offseason. That, of course, means a new round of competitors of the day are in. Nittany Lions defensive tackle Xavier Gilliam was asked earlier this year if the players pay close attention to the coaches’ picks every morning. His answer was an unequivocal ‘yes.’

“Everybody in the room, they want to compete,” he said. “And so the competitive day thing is kind of showing like, who’s competing the most. So that’s what everybody’s working for, to be honest.

“It’s all about winning reps. Winter workouts is a lot of competition to just win in reps, and competing.”

Head coach James Franklin’s program is now halfway through the grueling hour-long sessions that take the players into spring practice. The winners for March 4 featured the first three-peat of the offseason. Cornerback Elliot Washington II was yet again the pick of position coach Terry Smith. He is pushing for his best offseason yet as he prepares for his third college season. There was also a repeat winner at tight end and on special teams. Ty Howle picked sophomore Luke Reynolds for the second time in as many workouts, and Justin Lustig did the same with long snapper Tyler Duzansky. And, freshman running back Tikey Hayes got his first shout out as a Nittany Lion after enrolling back in January.
