Penn State football has completed its second winter workout of February. The team kicked off its six-to-seven-week stretch of grueling drills to get ready for spring practice back on Monday. On Wednesday, it was back inside Holuba Hall, which led to another round of competitor of the day picks from each position coach.

It’s really [about] the mental toughness and the willingness to do what you might not want to do while you’re tired,” Lions lineman Drew Shelton said last year when asked to describe winter workouts.

“We know that we’ve got to be able to grit it out. So, playing and doing all that stuff while we’re tired are what will really help us get better.”

Who were the standouts from winter workout No. 2?

As we noted back on Monday, graduate assistant Danny O’Brien, who is the defacto quarterbacks coach, is picking the workout winner at that position. It means that offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki is the only member of head coach James Franklin’s 10-man staff who is not making a selection. But, he is, of course, on hand for each session as he prepares for spring practice No. 1 in State College.

Here are the winter workout No. 2 winners:

Quarterback: Beau Pribula

Running back: Nick Singleton

Wide receiver: Malick Meiga

Tight end: Tyler Warren

Offensive line: Center Nick Dawkins

Defensive line: Defensive tackle Zane Durant

Linebacker: Dom DeLuca

Cornerback: AJ Harris

Safety: Zakee Wheatley

Special teams: Kicker Sander Sahaydak

Penn State takeaways from winter workout No. 2

Let’s start with the obvious: There were some repeat winners from Monday. Dawkins is off to a strong start in February as he picked up his second honor amid his quest to win the starting center job as a redshirt senior. Pribula, who was a mainstay in these rundowns a year ago, continues to thrive despite being in a backup role. He is also a second-time winner this winter.

Warren earned his first nod in the tight end room. He will be the unquestioned leader of that position group.

Finally, Terry Smith’s hat tip for transfer AJ Harris at cornerback is the first time Penn State has given a shout out to the former Georgia defender since announcing his arrival back in January.
