Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson held his weekly news conference on Tuesday at Rec Hall moments after James Franklin completed his first news conference of the 2025 season across campus. Today’s roundup covers both. First, on the grappling front, the longtime leader of the Lions told reporters that he’s not yet sure if injured 133-pound starter or hurt 157-pound starter Tyler Kasak will be back in the lineup this weekend when the team travels to Ohio State (Friday, 7 p.m. ET) and Illinois (Sunday, 2 p.m. ET).
“There are different kinds of injuries, right? There are season-ending injuries and there are things that are going to be a nuisance for him at the nationals, like Carter (Starocci) dealt with last year,” Sanderson said, per PennLive.
“We don’t have what we feel like are anything like that. So I think Davis, there’s a good chance he’ll wrestle this week, and there’s a chance he won’t wrestle this week. If it were the Big Ten tournament, he would be ready to rip and roll, he’d be good to go.”
Davis has missed the team’s last three matches with an undisclosed injury. Kasak, meanwhile, suffered a head injury against Iowa’s Jacori Teemer two weeks ago. He finished that match, wrestled his next one, albeit with a stoppage for a concussion check, and then injury defaulted his Sunday match with Maryland’s Ethen Miller after another concussion check.

“We have time to help him get back to full speed,” Sanderson said about Kasak, per PennLive. “He’s a tough kid. If it were up to him, he’s going. He’ll be good to go at some point here.”

Quote of the day
“We understand what it’s like. You have a plan, you have a routine, you kind of go back and do an after-action review about how things went as a program, the players do that as well, and then you attack it. So yeah, I think everybody is as disappointed as you could be when it ends. But there’s also a ton to be proud of and appreciative of. But the most important thing is that we use every experience we have, both positive and negative, to get better and grow. And that’s what I see all of our guys doing, including Drew.”
