Excerpts of Purdue Men’s Basketball chat
Each week — or at least most weeks — GoldandBlack.com hosts a chat session for site members to take questions regarding Purdue basketball.
Q; What is this team’s ceiling? I’m thinking second weekend and potentially more if they get the Indy regional and a good draw
A: I don’t know if there is a ceiling if a few things fall into place, but broadly I’d just say this is a S16/E8 kinda team working toward something even bigger next year.
Q: Will the potential redshirts (Benter/Burgess) play against Creighton and how do you think Painter will go about the playing time distribution?
A: I think he’ll manage it like a real game. Whether they prepare for it like a real game, that wasthe difference between Arkansas and Purdue last year. Purdue just practiced being Purdue, then showed up and played. Arkansas scouted 1990s Shaq.
I doubt anyone they’re planning to redshirt would play, but this there’s no precedent on how they handle it for this sort of game.

Q: What is the next step got Braden Smith? What can he be better at?
A: All about temperament, leadership and making everybody around him better now. Anything he can do to bring those around him to his competitive level. IMO.
Q: Is Gicarri Harris’ ceiling higher than the player Lance Jones was last year?
They are very different players. Harris isn’t going to transform Purdue with his speed or burst like Jones did, but long term, he could be a better player and a great intangible guy. Better defender, too. For as much as everyone loved Jones, he was a bit up and down defensively, more so than he should have been. Harris may be one of the best defenders they’ve ever had.
Q: Based on the number of freshmen and relative inexperience outside the big 3, I had tempered my expectations to top 4-6 in the big and making the tournament with a sweet sixteen being gravy.
Based off summer results, were those expectations too low for this team?
A: I think they’re a contender in the Big Ten for sure, but I also think they’re the most/only known team in the league, so who kows what’ll happen if other peoples’ transfers do great or Steve Piekell can actually coach lottery picks. That dude is gonna have his hands full this season with all that comes with those two guys.
