Gold and Black Radio: Purdue coaching search and Big Ten hoops talk
Purdue sports talk on our weekly show with host Derek Schultz and GoldandBlack.com’s Tom Dienhart on the coaching search and Brian Neubert on the state of Boillermaker hoops and the start of conference play Thursday at Penn State.
Purdue Coaching Search Day 2 (excerpt of Tom Dienhart story)
Purdue enters its second day in search of a replacement for Ryan Walters, who was fired on Sunday, Dec. 1. Here are some thoughts and buzz surrounding the program during the search …
• Purdue AD Mike Bobinski met the media today to discuss the search. He says there is no template for the next coach … offense, defense. But I do think the next guy HAS to be a proven head coach. And I still think it needs to be an offensive guy.The video player is currently playing an ad. You can skip the ad in 5 sec with a mouse or keyboard
• The only Power Four jobs open: North Carolina, West Virginia, UCF and Purdue. You’d think Bobinski should get a good choice with so few “big” openings.
• Sounds like UNLV’s Barry Odom is the top target at West Virginia. WVU AD Wren Baker was Deputy AD (2015-16) at Missouri when Odom was head coach in Columbia (2016-19).

Alabama WR to transfer
• Why not Miami of Ohio’s Chuck Martin? He’s a 56-year old who has excelled on lower levels. Martin won big at D2 Grand Valley State from 2004-09, going 74-7 with two national titles. (He followed Brian Kelly as Lakers head coach.) Martin has been in Oxford, Ohio, as head coach since 2014, going 64-66 overall and 51-32 in the MAC with five bowls and two MAC crowns. He has the RedHawks in the MAC title game this weekend. In between Grand Valley State and Miami, Martin spent five years at Notre Dame, serving as OC from 2012-13 for Kelly.
• Tulane’s Jon Sumrall is a name with some juice. He went 9-3 in his debut in New Orleans after going 23-4 the previous two seasons at Troy with two bowls. The problem: Everyone likes Sumrall, who could be the belle of this coaching ball.
• Jason Candle has spent 10 seasons at Toledo. Time to stretch your legs? He is 72-40. He’s an offensive guy. I would want to have an espresso with him and solicit his interest. I think Purdue needs a coach moving up … not a re-tread guy moving down from a better job. Candle seems ideal.
• Dave Clawson supposedly is trying to get out of Wake Forest. But, did he stay too long? The 57-year-old is coming off consecutive 4-8 seasons as he finished his 11th season in Winston-Salem, N.C.
