GoldandBlack.com Saturday Simulcast: Purdue-IU wrap and what comes next
GoldandBlack.com staffers Mike Carmin, Tom Dienhart and Alan Karpick following Purdue’s historic 66-0 loss at Indiana.
More from Purdue-IU
The 66-0 loss marks the biggest margin of defeat in Purdue lore. Previously, the record set at 59 points, set in Notre Dame’s 66-7 win in Ross-Ade Stadium on Sept. 14, 2024.
While the focus quickly turns to what’s next for the Boilermaker football program, a few thoughts from a frigid night in Bloomington:
- The slow starts continued. Purdue entered the locker room down 28-0, marking the fifth time the Boilermakers went scoreless in the first half in 2024. Indiana out-gained Purdue 331-54 in the first 30 minutes.
- Purdue’s offense struggled mightily. It took until the sixth offensive series for it to record a first down. Purdue finished the game with a mere 67 yards of offense.
- Big plays once again plagued Purdue’s defense. Indiana scored on touchdown passes of 24, 34 and 84 yards, and Purdue surrendered eight runs of 10+ yards. Indiana gained 582 total yards of offense.
- The Boilermakers close 2024 on an 11-game losing streak, including thumpings of 35, 39, 45, 46, 59 and 66 points.
Now, all eyes turn to the future. Will Purdue retain Ryan Walters, who finishes his second year with a 5-19 record in West Lafayette? Or will Mike Bobinski pull the plug on this regime altogether? The waiting game begins.

1 – What’s the future of Ryan Walters? That was the biggest story surrounding tonight’s game. AD Mike Bobinski’s silence on the matter has been deafening. With Signing Day looming on Wednesday, a decision on Walters likely will come soon after tonight’s game. It has to. The fan base is enraged at the direction of the program. Why does Walters think he’s the man for the job
“Because I’m prepared to do so, I know exactly what this place needs,” he said “I know exactly what holes we need to fill. I’ve got a pretty concrete and solidified plan moving forward that I feel will be beneficial to this program.
“I am frustrated, I’m disappointed, I’m angry about the results this year. I hear the fan base, and I hear the student body, and I’m frustrated and disappointed like they are. They also know who I am and the plan that we have, and I’m confident in that plan and sometimes when you build something, things take time. I feel like going into year three and being able to attack the holes that we need to fill and get the right people in place to push forward, I feel comfortable in that plan, confident in that plan.”
Has Bobinski told Walters he’ll be back in 2025?
“I’m not the person to ask that question,” he said.
