Purdue offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Graham Harrell and tight end Max Klare talk Wisconsin and more after practice on Tuesday.

Harrell knows the offense has to be more secure with the ball after Purdue committed four turnovers and fumbled seven times in a 35-20 loss to Syracuse last week.

“I think last game, consistently (was) the best we played just moving the football,” said Harrell. “But we consistently made giant mistakes to get you beat. The previous two games, we hadn’t turned the ball over at all and then we have a ton of turnovers. So, we got to be better there.”

Harrell was pleased with how QB Hudson Card threw the ball vs. the Orange. He hit 32-of-46 passes for 323 yards–all career highs for the Texas transfer, who also had a touchdown pass and interception vs. Syracuse.

“As far as throwing the football, I thought last game it was really a sharp,” said Harrell. “I thought Hudson was seeing it, playing at a really high level, throwing and catching well. That was good. We were good on third down, besides the short ones. … We just got to finish the drives.”

Klare has been a revelation in Harrell’s offense. With Garrett Miller slow to return from a knee injury and Paul Piferi out with a back issue, Klare has emerged as one of the team’s top targets. He is No. 2 on the squad with 15 grabs, going for 151 yards (10.1 ypc). Not bad for a redshirt freshman who was No. 3 on the depth chart.

“It’s been good,” said Klare. “Coaches have put me in a great position to succeed. Practice has been good, practicing hard. Obviously, Garrett Miller getting healthy helps me a lot, too. Drew Biber has been playing great, as well. So, you know, it’s been good so far.”

Has Klare been surprised by his production?

“I wouldn’t say I’m surprised,” said Klare. “I put in the work based off of the summer and spring ball. I’m not surprised, no.”
