Kanon Catchings

Purdue freshman Kanon Catchings has asked for — and been granted — a release from his letter-of-intent and will not join the program.

The highly regarded forward/wing from Brownsburg, via Overtime Elite, spoke with Boilermaker coach Matt Painter this week to discuss his role on this year’s team, which likely would have been considerable, but still to be determined. Afterward, he opted to look elsewhere, the final act of a commitment that at times was tenuous despite his support system’s strong feelings toward Purdue.

Catchings’ decommitment drops Purdue’s freshman class from six to five and takes care of a scolarship crunch that was going to otherwise be figured out via a non-scholarship arrangement for someone.

Purdue opens practice Tuesday. School starts Monday.

More to come.
