Number Crunching: Illinois week
Here is our eclectic look at the numbers of Purdue football heading into Saturday’s matchup with Illinois. We will start with a positive, which isn’t easy these days. Thanks to former Gold and Black crack intern Griffin Herdegen for his ample assistance on this.
42 and 38
Dillon Thieneman (42) and Kydran Jenkins (38) have combined for 80 tackles this and are the only teammates that rank in the Big Ten’s Top 6 in tackles per game.
6
Number of consecutive wins the Boilermakers have at Memorial Stadium dating back to 2010. It is the longest Purdue road winning streak against a Big Ten opponent since it posted 10 straight wins at Iowa’s Kinnick Stadium from 1962-79.
2
Number of teams, excluding FCS opponents, Purdue has outscored in the 134 team FBS. Unfortunately, the Boilermakers defense ranks 129th out of 134 teams in the country in points allowed per game with 45.0 – both worse amongst Power 4 teams. The Boilers average margin of defeat this year is now 35.0 points per game, 133rd out of 134 amongst FBS competition and more than double that of the next-worst Power 4 team (UCLA, -16.0 points per game).
0 <35
Under Jeff Brohm, the Boilers didn’t lose by 35 points during the regular season a single time, and under Darrell Hazell they only suffered 35+-point losses five times. Hazell lost 33 games at Purdue and “only”five of them were by 35+ points. Walters’ teams have dropped two 35-plus point losses this season and a 34-point decision to Ohio State in 2023.

52+
From 2000-2022, in regular season games, the Boilers have only allowed 52+ points by opposing offenses seven times total (out of 293 games – 2.4%). This year, in only five games, they have not only allowed 52+ points twice (40% of their games).
117
The Boilers recorded only 117 passing yards against Wisconsin, the third time this year that Purdue’s offense has recorded less than 125 passing yards in a game. Purdue has yet to pass for less than 125 yards three times in a season since 2010. In Purdue’s 10 years under coaches Brohm and Hazell, it threw for under 125 yards in a game, only five times in total.

Number of times Purdue has won on the road as a 17.5 underdog–the opening line of this week’s game in Champaign. Meanwhile Illinois has been 17.5+-point favorites 24 times since 1998 but have actually dropped four of those games, most recently in 2010 when they lost to a 1-9 Minnesota team in a game that they were favored by 21 points in.
That’s enough.
