A scoreless first half gave way to Nebraska breaking through in the second to win at Purdue Saturday afternoon, 28-10, dropping the Boilermakers to 1-3.

Though penalty-ridden, the Boilermaker defense kept Purdue in the game to the point it took a 3-0 lead on an eight-minute drive to open the third, but Nebraska responded with a touchdown drive and never looked back.

A few quick takeaways …

• Penalties may not have been the story, but certainly were a big part of it. Purdue was called for six defensive pass interference penalties and 165 yards worth of infractions in total. Seven Nebraska first downs came from those penalties. Every PI call is subjective, but only one call stood out as glaringly bad.

Purdue’s DBs’ just caught too much. This was reminiscent of Purdue’s win at Illinois when Walters was the Illini DC.

• Purdue’s offense just has very little punch whatsoever right now. Whether that’s design, play-calling, shoddy protection or a crippling lack of playmakers right now, that’s in the eye of the beholder. But this continues to not be pretty, Hudson Card not having much of a chance at all again.

The defense needed to be more disciplined today, but the offense hung it out to dry again.

But the protection was again shoddy, as Card was sacked five times and hurried on a late pick-six. Nebraska made eight tackles for loss.

• Purdue blocked two field goals. so there’s that. No one’s going to get too excited after three consecutive losses.
