NOTES:

• This unit was bolstered more than any other on the team via the portal with four additions: Joey Tanona, Corey Stewart, DJ Wingfield and Joshua Sales. The staff also procured two JC transfers: Jaekwon Bouldin and Rod Green. That’s six veterans added to the mix, bringing much needed experience and size to the unit. It wouldn’t be a shock to see Stewart start at one tackle slot. Tanona is a former four-star recruit from Notre Dame who hasn’t played the last two seasons after getting hurt in a car crash.

• The return of C Gus Hartwig was a god-send. He figures to be one of the Big Ten’s top pivots in 2024 and perhaps is a future pro. Who will backup Hartwig, who has 36 career starts? Jimmy Liston? Austin Johnson?

• Marcus Mbow is back after seeing his 2023 cut short to six games by a knee injury suffered at Iowa. He likely will slide from tackle to guard, where he has starting experience. Mahamane Moussa also is back to serve as an anchor. Look for Moussa again to start at one tackle slot.

• Jalen Grant and Luke Griffin are back at guard. Grant started all 12 games in 2023 after arriving from Bowling Green. Griffin, a Missouri transfer, came on later in the year before suffering a season-ending injury vs. Ohio State in October. Grant is a bit undersized; Griffin is a massive wall of flesh.

• The lone losses of note up front are T Daniel Johnson, G Preston Nichols, T Ben Farrell and G/C Josh Kaltenberger, who transferred to Maryland. Nichols is the biggest loss, starting every game in 2023.
