For Hudauri Hines, the choice was easy. Purdue was the school for him.

“Everything I needed is there,” said Hines. “I didn’t want to waste no time. I mean, why would I waste time when everything I needed was at Purdue and go to other places and search for it?”

And just like that, Hines committed to Purdue last weekend after visiting for Junior Day on Sunday. The three-star cornerback from Franklin Central High in Indianapolis held offers from the likes of Minnesota and Illinois. And Notre Dame and Ohio State were sniffing around, too, as interest in Hines likely would have gained more steam over the spring and summer. But the 6-2, 185-pound Hines already has put a bow on his recruitment.

Now, Hines is stamped as Purdue’s first commitment in the Class of 2024. A big part of his appeal to the Boilermakers was first-year head coach Ryan Walters and his ability to develop defensive backs. He groomed some good ones in his last coaching stop at Illinois, where he was defensive coordinator, like 2022 Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year Devon Witherspoon, Sydney Brown and Jartavius Martin.

“That was a big factor,” said Hines. “I’m trying to get to the NFL. That’s my goal.”

Hines describes himself as a man-to-man corner who can take out the best receivers in the game. Who’s he look up to? New York Jets rookie Sauce Gardner and the Denver Broncos’ Patrick Surtain.

“Everyone on the Purdue staff is very genuine,” said Hines, who says he runs a 4.5 40. “It was nothing like I had ever seen in a coaching staff before. Everybody is just connected. It was new.”

The chance to play close to his Indianapolis also appealed to Hines, who has been to West Lafayette a handful of times in recent years and plans to visit for spring ball.

“It was very important,” said Hines, who has played a little receiver. “I want my mom and siblings to be able to come up and see me play. And I can go down and see them whenever I want. They will be just an hour away. That played a big part of it.”

As Hines gears toward his senior season, he is taking on a new role: Purdue recruiter.

“Oh, yes, I am doing it now,” said Hines who has a twin brother Emaur who plays for Franklin Central. “I am trying to get (NorthWood High cornerback) Jo’Ziah Edmond. I am trying to get him to come up there. And some of my teammates, too.”
