Purdue All-American TE Dave Young has passed away
Purdue All-American Dave Young has passed away. He was 64.
Arguably the best tight end in school history, Young played for the Boilermakers from 1977-80, leaving Purdue as the school’s all-time leader in catches (180), receiving yards (2,316) and TD catches (27). Those numbers still stand eighth, ninth and second, respectively, in school annals.
Young’s best season was his last in 1980, when he earned All-Big Ten and consensus All-American honors. That season, Young became the first tight end to lead the nation in receptions per game, hauling in 70 passes for 959 yards and nine touchdowns as a top target for Mark Herrmann.
Young was also All-Big Ten in 1979, when he made 10 TD catches, which at the time were second most in a season for Purdue. He finished that season with 55 receptions for 584 yards.

The 6-5, 242-pound native of Akron, Ohio, helped lead Purdue to three bowls wins in succession from 1978-80 for coach Jim Young. The 1979 team went 10-2, the only time in school history the Boilermakers have won 10 games. Young was elected to Purdue’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.
Young was a second-round selection (32nd overall) of the New York Giants in the 1981 NFL Draft. He also played for the Colts in 1983 and 1984, making 19 catches for 213 yards and three TDs in 25 career games over three seasons.
